The songs lyrics were inspired by ‘The Sand Creek Massacre’ which was a massacre that occurred on November 29, 1864, when a 675-man force of Colorado U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the command of U.S. Army Colonel John Chivington (a Methodist preacher) attacked & destroyed a village in Colorado Territory, killing & mutilating an estimated 70–500 Native Americans, about two-thirds of whom were women & children. There was a movie loosely based on this tragic event released in 1970 called Soldier Blue.
